SPAM: Attempts to control SPAM are out of control.
I've come to the conclusion e-mail as a reliable method of communication is being threatened by flawed attempts to filter Spam.

None of the articles I've read in all the major publications purporting to give you "the best" solutions to unsolicited e-mail have even mentioned the most effective tool - which is the free, open-source POPFile. I've been using this for over 10 months. There is a training period - but after a short time, accuracy usually goes above 95%. For the last few months, 99.5% of the e-mail I receive has been filtered from spam correctly and automatically.

This includes e-mail with all the tricks spammers are trying to get ar()und w0rd b/\sed fi|ters. How?  individual e-mail sorting using Naive Bayes classification.

POPFile can be a little tricky to set up depending upon your e-mail program and your familiarity with the setup options. But, this gives it the flexibility to work with almost any e-mail program (Outlook Express, Eudora, Outlook, etc.). But, if you use Outlook 2000 or Outlook 2002 (not Outlook Express), there's Outclass - which I recently started using. Outclass requires and uses POPFile, but integrates the classification and handling directly in Outlook - Outclass is super! And, install is really simplified - install POPFile, install Outclass. No need to reconfigure any e-mail settings.

Techniques being employed by other types of e-mail filtering - both locally and by ISPs or third-party  services - can never achieve 99+% accuracy - and will prevent delivery of e-mail that (at least to you) is not Spam.

I have an e-mail account with Earthlink that supposedly provides Spam filtering. Before I ever used this e-mail account anywhere, I started receiving Spam! (Earthlink actually uses mail servers that allow spammers to find valid Earthlink addresses!!! Unbelievable, but true!) I receive SPAM from Earthlink itself - I opt-out and continue to receive it!

ISPs that want to provide Spam filtering should think about providing a server-based individual Naive Bayes classification filter. The good news is the commercial products are evolving and some are starting to add this type of filtering. The bad news is that many of the so-called "best" and "best selling" Spam filters do a horrible job because they are primarily based upon easily circumvented scoring systems. If you want a solution now - check out POPFile and Outclass.
